A Note on Actors-in-Rebellion

Actors-in-Rebellion is an informal affiliation of
actors, enthusiasts and theatrical people. It is a
statement of principle, the aim being to focus
attention on the
QUALITY of Shakespearean
performance in Australia.

The adherents to this creed are convinced that
relevant portrayal of Shakespeare requires more
than a relocation of scene into a period setting, and
more than the application of special effects and
theatrical tricks - these should not be used for their
own sake.

Central to the philosophy is the belief that audiences
– even uneducated audiences –  can understand
Shakespeare's art without dumbing-down the play,
playing-down to the audience, re-writing the
language, or reducing pathos to reflexive laughter.

Such an approach requires education of actors into
the language and style of Shakespeare. This is a
key mission of the Melbourne Shakespeare Society
Reading Group. (see above)

Note about SHAKESPEARE INK

SHAKESPEARE INK reflects the importance of language (i.e. the
text) to Shakespeare production. But also the belief that a quality
production must INK-corporate theatre craft and psychological
understanding.

SHAKESPEARE INK was instigated by Jason Freddi and Paul
Roebuck
(Former lecturer in Drama at Melbourne State College
[now Melbourne University] with 40 years experience in live theatre
and Shakespeare education). Paul is Immediate Past President of
the
Melbourne Shakespeare Society, Jason is its current President.
They have worked together as co-producers of the
2003 Melbourne
Shakespeare Festival, Shakespeare in Italy (2002),
As You Like It  (2003), Dying Love Lives Still  (2006). Paul and
Jason were both involved with planning and running of the 2004
Monsalvat Shakespeare Festival.

Jason and Paul are actively involved in the
Melbourne
Shakespeare Society Reading Group
, which in 2006 completed
the second cycle of rehearsed, semi-staged (i.e. moved) readings
of the
Shakespeare Canon (each read-through takes 4 years). Paul
initiated this project in 1998 and is currently convener of the group.
New readers are welcome; no experience necessary, the group
includes enthusiasts and 'pros' (Enquiries: phone Paul on Australia
