| A Note on Actors-in-Rebellion Actors-in-Rebellion is an informal affiliation of actors, enthusiasts and theatrical people. It is a statement of principle, the aim being to focus attention on the QUALITY of Shakespearean performance in Australia. The adherents to this creed are convinced that relevant portrayal of Shakespeare requires more than a relocation of scene into a period setting, and more than the application of special effects and theatrical tricks - these should not be used for their own sake. Central to the philosophy is the belief that audiences – even uneducated audiences – can understand Shakespeare's art without dumbing-down the play, playing-down to the audience, re-writing the language, or reducing pathos to reflexive laughter. Such an approach requires education of actors into the language and style of Shakespeare. This is a key mission of the Melbourne Shakespeare Society Reading Group.
